Online or Off?

Here's a quick brain teaser: what's the difference between playing with your friends online and playing with your friends right next to you? Try to answer that question without just restating the question and you might have trouble...or you might not, depending on how you play online.

Here's an easier question: in terms of the actual experience, what's the difference between playing against a person and playing against bots? You can actually talk to a person, and that's it. Bots may not be quite as smart as human players, but in the middle of the game, you're not going to be thinking about that.

So for online gaming to really be worthwhile, at least in my opinion, it's got to be something like Xbox Live that lets you talk to other players. People always say gaming isn't a social experience, but it can be if we make it one.

Well, I'm going to be disagreeing with some of what you said... because there is just such a difference...

Now... it's not the main point, but surely you play the DS and take note that the WiFi is much more limited than what local wireless is. Just one example is that Portrait of Ruin has a toned down version of the fun multiplayer boss rush mode. I think to date the one game that was "officially" stated as not being limited would be Prime Hunters. Maybe Animal Crossing.
On top of that, some things are only possible with the local wireless. Alongside that, it's difficult to find people with a DS, much less with the same games, much less who want to link up. WiFi, if it improves, will negate that.

But... in general, I actually would much rather be there in a room with friends instead of just... chatting or playing over the net. Both may be equally good on many points...
However, I don't know if I told you, but I got with my friend who is visiting for the week. He lives in Canada at the moment... so... yeah, we did play games, but we also went out and were like, getting some personal time together at the mall and such. Ate at a restaurant. Simply chatted. Played on GameCube.
Oh... more on that later.
It was such an enjoyable experience. And... I don't play Go that often, but we usually play it on the net because of the circumstances. However, were I to play it, I would prefer on an actual Go board, and to be holding the pieces and such.

As for bots... I get so lonely when I'm playing like... Smash Bros against bots, or if I'm playing games by myself in general. And, there is just some element that blocks the great fun of beating someone down when it's... a computer. I mean, challenging ones are great, but it's nothing quite like beating down your buddies for bragging rights.
As an idea, I can barely keep up with my one friend when he plays as Shiek and such... but... yeah, I've taken out Giga Bowser, Gannondorf, and Mewtwo with... I think nearly every character. I don't know. I know for sure I did the Jigglypuff trick, beat them down with Marth, and then I even went as far as with Ice Climbers because they were the first character I played with.

There is just something special about playing games with people... there is something more special about actually breathing the same air in the same room as well while doing the above. :3

At least, it's my take on it.
